Project: Tissue Engineering Lexicon

TYPE: STANDARDS ADVANCEMENT PROJECT

Partners: ASTM International, ARMI|BioFabUSA, and the SCB Tissue Engineering Sector Working Group

Get Involved:

Accepting new working group members

Description:

Tissue engineering involves the use of scaffolds, cells, and biologically active molecules to restore, maintain, or improve tissues or organs damaged by injury or disease. In the past 10 years, tissue engineering technology has advanced and new specializations have emerged. As the field evolves, tissue engineering terminology must evolve with it.

ASTM F2312, Standard Terminology Related to Tissue Engineered Medical Products is a primary lexicon for the tissue engineering field. However, the terminology in the lexicon is not aligned with current usage because it has not been updated since it was originally published in 2011. Periodic updates to the lexicon are critical for clear communication among stakeholders and ensuring proper product classification, which can impact qualification for certain expedited regulatory pathways.

SCB is working with ARMI|BioFabUSA to coordinate an update to ASTM F2312 that includes community input on real-world use of tissue engineering terms and incorporates definitions from commonly used resources in the field.

Project progress timeline

Note: Projected start dates are estimates only. Development of a standard depends on SDO timelines, which can vary.

Assembling a Working Group: SCB assembled a working group to contribute to the update of the standard. SCB is seeking additional experts to join the working group and share input on how they use tissue engineering terminology in their work.

Providing Draft Support: SCB is coordinating the working group as the draft moves through the ASTM standard development process.
